Launch Project

Before And After

Before I breakdown my process, first, some results:

I joined Holidaygogogo on 20 July 2020 and started producing articles and optimizing existing web copy. For the most accurate stats, I will start calculating from July 31 onwards to give Google time to index and reflect site changes on search rankings. On 31 July, daily traffic was at 1,288.
As you can see from the above image, monthly traffic was on an uptrend for the entire month of August. We hit a peak user volume of 3,200 users/day. A 148% increase from the start of the month.
The site ended the month at a comfortable daily traffic volume of 2,559. This was a 98% increase in traffic. Throughout the entirety of August, the site’s daily user volume never fell below 2,000.

The Breakdown: was my first professional attempt at SEO. Before this, I had some exposure to SEO in creating websites and copies.

In the weeks leading up to the start of my job (on 20th July 2020), I learned extensively about SEO and all its various techniques. Udemy’s paid courses, Brian Dean’s SEO courses, Neil Patel, Moz’s free and paid guides… you name it. So long as the title had ‘SEO’ in it, I was all over it. Additionally, I read Webmaster guidelines, forums, and Search Engine Journal articles.

One month later, I was ready to begin.

For Holidaygogogo, a site whose keyword ranking power was already pretty strong, it seemed like a pretty straightforward deal: create content that answered user queries and gave value.

My SEO checklist for Holidaygogogo:

  1. Use benefit-driven headlines to generate interest and desire.
  2. Research keywords to discover evergreen topics, keyword opportunities, related keywords, and questions.
  3. Write the most valuable piece of content available for my topic (based on the Skyscraper Technique, but without backlinks).
  4. Create a healthy site structure by adding internal links to relevant pieces of content.
  5. Optimize images and alt tags.
  6. Optimize social media preview text and images.
  7. Optimize headers to include keywords and answer user queries.
  8. Publish blog posts to social media channels.
  9. Rinse and repeat.

Beyond Writing

As an SEO Specialist at Holidaygogogo, my tasks went beyond just writing articles.

  • A few months in, we expanded our SEO team with several Malaysian freelance writers. I was tasked with hiring and managing these writers, while also ensuring content met our quality standards. One of the ways I did this was by offering basic SEO and writing training. I also created guides, SEO briefs, and a full content calendar for these writers to follow.
  • I was also in charge of planning our content schedule and setting milestones.
  • Additionally, one of my tasks was to help create a destination page structure. We built up a central island destination page (for example) that would rank high for strong keywords, then link out from there to relevant blog content. I figured that this was the best way to present our content.
Articles are listed (automatically updated by category) on each island’s central destination page.
